TIG welding has been the standard for neat stainless steel welds for decades. But it is slow and depends on highly skilled welders. The handheld fiber laser welding machine offers a different approach.
Speed
On thin stainless steel, laser welding is typically 2 to 4 times faster than TIG, because the laser creates the weld pool instantly and the operator moves at a steady pace.
Finish and distortion
Laser welds are narrow and flat with a very small heat-affected zone. Thin sheets stay straight, discolouration is minimal and post-weld grinding is often eliminated.
Operator skill
The machine controls power, wobble and wire feed. Semi-skilled operators can produce consistent welds after short training — easing dependence on scarce TIG welders.
Cost
A laser welder costs more upfront than a TIG set, but higher output per operator and less finishing work usually pay back the difference quickly in busy workshops.
When TIG still makes sense
Very thick sections, occasional repair work or field welding far from power supply may still favour conventional welding.
